FL Drive out of Strong I Close (21 personnel) sends the flanker on a deep corner route from the outside while the TE runs a drive route underneath, crossing the field on a shallow in that settles as an outlet. A second receiver works a flat route toward the sideline off the same side as the TE, giving a three level stretch: deep corner, intermediate drive, and short flat. This is a Cover 4 beater built to attack the seams vacated when safeties bail on the corner route, and the primary read progression starts with the deep corner against off coverage or a rotated safety, works down to the TE drive crossing the middle if the corner is capped, and checks down to the flat route as the last resort against a blitz or tight coverage.
Defensive Reads
Read the safety alignment before the snap. Two high safeties with soft corners signal Cover 4, which is exactly what this play is designed to exploit on the corner route. Watch the flat defender post snap. If a linebacker or corner sinks too deep trying to cover the drive route, the flat route will be wide open for an easy pitch and catch. Man coverage without a deep safety rotating over the top gets beat quickly by the corner route, so user the deep defender immediately at the snap to bracket the sideline. Cover 2 with hard corners jumping the flat can bait the quarterback into an easy interception if he does not progress through his reads to the drive route in time. A blitz that brings extra defenders off the edge will pressure the quarterback before the corner route develops, so a spy or a quick blitz read forces the checkdown to the flat.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, check for two high safeties or Cover 4 shells since this play is designed to punish quarters coverage when the corner route splits the safety and corner.
If you see man coverage with no help over the top, throw the corner route early before the defender can undercut it, since it wins on separation off the break.
Use the TE drive route as your primary answer versus zone coverage that sits deep, since it settles in the void between linebackers and safeties.
Pair this play with HB Dive or FB Dive on early downs to sell run action and get defenders to bite on run fits, then come back to FL Drive to hit the corner route against an aggressive front.
Best called on second or third and medium when you need a defined stretch on the safety, since the flat route gives a safe checkdown if the deep options are covered.
