Breakdown

TE Attack out of Singleback Wing Tight Z is a five man route flood concept designed to stretch the field both vertically and horizontally. The outside receiver runs a go route up the sideline while the slot man works a deep corner, creating a two man high low stretch on the boundary corner. Underneath, the TE releases into a drag across the middle, the wing runs a flat route, and the HB checks out of the backfield on a shallow out, giving the quarterback a full field progression from deep corner down to the flat.

Defensive Reads

Identify single high versus two high safeties before the snap to anticipate whether the corner or the go route will be open deep. Watch the flat defender post snap since he has to choose between the wing route and the HB out, leaving one of them open in Cover 3. Against Cover 4 or Cover 6, the drag becomes the primary answer since the deep routes will be capped by two deep defenders on that side. Man coverage with no help over the top is vulnerable to the go route beating a corner in isolation. Watch for a lurking linebacker sitting on the drag in Tampa 2 or pattern match zones, which can jump the crossing route if you stare it down.

Usage Tips

Read the corner and safety shell before the snap to decide between the deep corner route and the drag underneath.

Against Cover 3, target the drag or the out since the flat defender cannot cover both the wing and the HB.

Against Cover 2, work the corner route into the void between the flat defender and the deep half safety.

Use hot routes to convert the HB route into a check release if you need extra protection against pressure looks.

Pair this play with Curl Flat or Y Stick from the same set to keep the defense guessing between flood concepts and quick game answers.
