Breakdown

PA Sprint HB Flat is a play-action rollout concept out of Singleback Wing Tight Z that sells run action before the quarterback sprints out to the right edge. Off the fake, one receiver runs a deep out breaking route from the boundary while a second receiver climbs vertically then breaks hard outside toward the sideline, and the underneath red route works flat to the play side as the initial checkdown. The primary read progression starts with the deep breaking route off the sprint, works down to the vertical out breaking route, and finishes with the flat route as the safety valve if the quarterback is forced to throw on the move.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing man coverage with corners pressed on the outside receivers, since the vertical out breaking route can be tough to defend in isolated man matchups. Watch for a flat defender or user controlled defender sitting on the flat route, which is the easiest read for the offense to bail out to if the sprint gets pressured. Key the linebackers after the snap. If they flow hard to the run fake and vacate their zone drops, the deep breaking route will have a wide open throwing lane behind them. Cover 3 with a fast flat defender and disciplined linebackers who do not overcommit to the run fake is the best matchup to shut this down, since it clogs the flat and forces a tighter window on the out routes. Blitzes off the edge that the sprint action rolls toward can disrupt the timing, so a user rush off that side or a nano blitz aimed at containing the quarterback's roll direction is effective against this concept.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs or manageable third and short situations where defenses are still respecting the run fake from Singleback personnel.

Check safety depth before the snap. If you see a single high safety cheating toward the boundary, the deep breaking route to the field side has a soft window against zone shells.

Roll with the quarterback sprint and keep your eyes moving through the progression instead of locking onto the first route, since the play design wants you working from deep to flat.

Pair this with HB Inside Zone or HB Power O from the same set so defenses have to respect the run fake before you hit them with the sprint action.

Sequence this after Curl Flat or Curl Flat Seam to condition linebackers into sitting on shorter zone drops, then punish them with the deeper out breaking route once they bite on run and short pass tendencies.
