Breakdown

HB Mid Zone is a run play out of Singleback Wing Tight Z that sends the running back through the interior gaps behind a zone blocking scheme up front. The offensive line steps in unison to the play side, sealing gaps and creating a natural cutback lane if the initial hole gets clogged. This is a pure run play, not play-action or an RPO, and the primary read progression starts with the fullback or wing tight end lead blocker at the point of attack before working through the zone landmarks (frontside gap to backside cutback) based on how the defense flows.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is in a base 4-3 or 3-4 under front, since heavier fronts with an extra defender in the box will bottle up the interior cutback lanes. Watch linebacker depth at the snap. Linebackers sitting flat footed at the mesh point tend to get sealed easily by the zone blocking, while linebackers already flowing downhill can blow up the play before it develops. Key the safety alignment before the snap. A single high safety often signals man coverage on the perimeter, meaning the box defenders are on their own to fit the run, which favors the offense. User controlled defenders flowing hard to the play side gap are the biggest threat to this run, since they can shoot the frontside gap and force an immediate cutback read. Against nano blitz packages or heavy A gap pressure looks, this play can get negative yardage quickly, so be ready to check into a quick pass or hot route the fullback to pick up the extra rusher.

Usage Tips

Run this play when defenses show a light box with six or fewer defenders in the run fit, since the zone blocking scheme struggles against extra second level defenders crashing downhill.

Use your pre-snap read to check linebacker depth and alignment. If both linebackers are stacked tight to the line, consider audibling to HB Stretch or HB Pitch to bounce the run outside instead.

Manually control the HB after the handoff so you can plant and cut off the puller or lead blocker rather than relying on the CPU logic to find the hole.

Pair this play with Fake HB Zone QB Boot Lt or PA Middle later in a series once you have established the mid zone run, since defenders will start crashing down and open up boot and play-action windows.

Best called on early downs (first and ten, second and short) to stay ahead of the sticks and set up longer developing shots like Dagger or PA Y Corner off the same run fake tendencies.
