PA Middle out of Singleback Wing Tight Z is a play-action shot play built off the middle run fake to hold the linebackers and safeties. Post snap, the fullback or in-line blocker runs a shallow drag underneath while the tight end from the wing bursts vertically before breaking into a deep crossing route, and the backside X receiver runs a corner route up the numbers. The primary read progression starts with the deep corner route against man coverage, works down to the crossing route attacking the middle void in zone, and checks down to the shallow drag if the play-action fake draws the linebackers up and neither deep route is open.

Defensive Reads

Watch linebacker depth pre-snap, if they are sitting shallow expecting run they will bite on the fake and open up the crossing route in the middle of the field. Identify single high versus two high safety shells before the snap, single high leaves the corner route on an island against man coverage which is a big weakness for this concept. Post-snap, track any user controlled defender flowing into the shallow drag lane or sitting as a lurk defender in the middle hook zone, that player can jump the crossing route and blow up the primary read. Zone drops from Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with linebackers getting depth quickly will take away the crossing route, forcing the corner route or checkdown to the drag. Aggressive interior blitzes can beat this play before routes develop since the play fake delays the quarterback's ability to get through his progression, so recognize pressure early and get to the drag as a hot outlet.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage so the play fake actually influences run blitzers and linebacker run fits.

Check the safety alignment pre-snap, if you see two deep safeties sitting at depth the crossing route into the middle void becomes your first look instead of the corner.

Use the corner route as your man beater versus press or trail technique on the X receiver, it is a high value shot play against Cover 1 and Cover 3 with a single deep defender to that side.

Pair this with HB Inside Zone or HB Mid Zone earlier in a drive so the run fake sells and linebackers start cheating up, then hit them with PA Middle for the explosive crossing route.

If the defense shows heavy blitz pre-snap, hot route the shallow drag to a quick option or throw it early as your outlet since the deep routes take time to develop off the fake.
