Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify single high safety alignment since that tips Cover 1 or Cover 3, both of which are vulnerable to the deep post if the corner has outside leverage. Watch linebacker depth and run fits at the snap, if they crash hard on the counter action they will be late getting to shallow crosser and corner route zones. Post-snap, key the deep safety's reaction to the play-action fake, if he steps up to defend the run the post route will be wide open behind him. This play struggles against two-high shells like Cover 2 or Cover 4 where the deep safeties stay home and squeeze the post route, so look for a user-controlled defender sitting in the middle of the field robbing that route. Man coverage with inside leverage corners is the best matchup since the post and corner routes both attack the boundary and the seam simultaneously, forcing a conflict for any single defender trying to pattern match.

Use this on early downs like 1st or 2nd and medium to keep the defense honest against the run fake and to sell the play-action look. Check pre-snap for single high safety shells like Cover 1 or Cover 3 since the post route has a clean lane to attack the deep middle when the safety is forced to respect the counter action. If the corner sits deep in Cover 2 or Cover 4, hot route the shallow crosser into a spot or drag concept to give yourself a quick underneath answer against zone drops. Pair this play in your call sheet with HB Counter Wk or HB Power O earlier in the drive so the defense keys run action and bites on the fake, setting up the explosive shot play. Against aggressive blitz looks, get the ball out fast to the shallow crosser since the play-action mesh point can slow down protection against overload pressure.
