Drive out of Singleback Wing Tight Z 13 personnel is a classic Cover 4 beater built around a two-man drive concept on the backside and a flat/wheel combo to the boundary. The backside X and slot run stacked in routes, with the outside receiver crossing under on a deep dig-like drive route while the inside receiver breaks flat underneath toward the sideline, creating a natural pick against man coverage and a horizontal stretch against zone. To the play side, the TE runs a flat route while the HB releases from the backfield on an angle route into the void behind the flat, giving the QB a three-level read from the backside crossers down to the underneath flat/angle combo. Primary read progression starts with the backside drive route working inside out, then bounces to the flat/angle combo if the middle of the field is clogged by underneath zone defenders.
Defensive Reads
Identify safety alignment before the snap, two deep safeties suggest Cover 4 or Cover 2 which this play is designed to exploit with the drive concept. Watch the flat defender to the play side, if he sinks with the TE flat route it opens the HB angle route as a check down against man or zone alike. Key the backside linebacker's drop, a slow or shallow drop leaves the drive route wide open for the QB to hit on time. Beware of Cover 1 or Cover 3 Sky with an aggressive user-controlled linebacker sitting in the middle, he can jump the drive route and turn it into a pick six if the QB is late. Look for blitzing linebackers off the edge, since the backside protection is a five-man scheme with no extra blocker released, a nano blitz can collapse the pocket before the drive route develops.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs or third and medium when you expect Cover 4 or Cover 2 shells since the drive routes settle into the natural seams those coverages leave open.
Read the backside linebacker depth pre-snap. If he is sitting shallow, the drive route from the outside receiver will have room to work behind him for a big chunk gain.
Hot route the HB angle route into a flat if you see man coverage from a linebacker, this gives you an easy option against blitzes since he releases quickly.
Pair this play with Curl Flat Seam and Y Stick from the same set to keep the defense guessing between horizontal stretch concepts and quick game answers.
Against Cover 3, look to the crossing drive route sooner since the flat defender will be occupied by the TE and HB combo, opening a throwing lane over the shallow zone.
