H Power Toss is a run play out of Singleback Wing Tight Z that tosses the ball to the HB attacking the perimeter behind a wall of pulling blockers. The diagram shows the offensive line sealing down and combo blocking to the play side while the H back and wing TE pull outside to lead block, kicking out the edge defender and creating a running lane on the second level. This is a pure run design with no route combos or pass options, so the primary read is the pulling blockers: identify the kick out man and the lead blocker, then pick the crease between the sealed inside blocks and the outside blockers based on how the edge defender reacts.
Defensive Reads
Watch for defensive ends and outside linebackers crashing hard inside since that is exactly what this toss is designed to exploit with the pulling blockers. Fast flowing linebackers who read the pulling guard or fullback quickly can beat this play to the point of attack, so look for aggressive run fits from the second level. A safety rotating down into the box pre-snap signals extra run support and can clog the perimeter lane before the blockers get set. Contain defenders who stay disciplined on the edge instead of crashing force the ball carrier to bounce or cut back into traffic, killing the play design. User-controlled defenders spying the edge or shooting outside gaps can blow up the kick out block and string the toss out of bounds for a loss.
Usage Tips
Check the defensive front pre-snap and look for light edge numbers or a defensive end lined up too far inside since that opens the toss lane immediately.
Use motion or a hard count to see if linebackers flow hard to the strength, then attack the opposite edge if they overcommit.
Hot route the wing TE to adjust his kick out angle if you see an extra defender crashing off the edge on run downs.
Pair this play with HB Counter Wk and HB Power O in the same set to keep defenders guessing between misdirection and gap runs off similar formation looks.
Best used on run downs like first and ten or short yardage second down when defenses are more likely to sit in base fronts rather than nickel or dime packages.
