PA Boot Lt is a play-action rollout out of Singleback Wing Tight Z that pulls the QB left on a boot after selling a run fake, giving you a three level read to that side. The deep route breaks outside toward the sideline off a corner stem, the intermediate route runs a deep crossing pattern back across the field underneath it, and the flat route from the wing/attached TE releases quickly toward the boot side sideline as a checkdown. The backside receiver runs a vertical release up the numbers as a one-on-one shot play if the defense bites hard on the play-action fake. Primary progression is flat to intermediate crosser to the deep outside breaking route, with the backside vertical as a big play alert if the defense shows single high or the corner bites on run action.
Watch cornerback depth on the boot side before the snap: a corner playing off coverage signals room for the flat route to sit down underneath, while a corner pressed at the line suggests he is baiting the crosser or corner route. Key the flat side linebacker after the snap since he determines whether the flat or the crossing route stays open, if he sinks with the crosser the flat is wide open and if he jumps the flat the crosser has room. This beats zone shells like Cover 3 and Cover 4 because the boot action pulls the edge defender and linebackers out of position, but it struggles against disciplined Cover 2 or Cover 4 teams that keep both safeties deep and squeeze the sideline. Look for user-controlled defenders spying the boot lane or shooting the edge on a contain blitz, since a fast edge rusher who reads play-action can disrupt the QB before routes develop. Man coverage with no safety help over the top on the backside is the biggest bust alert, take the deep vertical shot immediately if you see man match or Cover 1 with the corner playing off the line.
Run this on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage since the play-action fake needs run respect to hold linebackers and safeties. Check the safety alignment pre-snap: if you see two high safeties sitting deep, prioritize the flat and crossing route since the deep corner route will be capped. If it is single high or the defense shows run blitz looks with linebackers crowding the box, throw the backside vertical route immediately off the fake for an explosive play. Hot route the flat defender to a quick out if you see a linebacker sitting directly on top of the flat release to open a passing lane. Pair this with 26 Duo and HB Inside Zone earlier in a series so the play-action fake sells convincingly, then mix in Fake HB Zone QB Boot Lt as a designed rollout run counter to keep the defense honest on edge contain.
