HB Stretch out of Singleback Wing Tight Z is an outside zone run play with the offensive line flowing laterally to reach block and seal defenders while the HB takes a wide track toward the sideline before pressing a cutback lane. The diagram shows the fullback/H attaching to the play side as an extra blocker with the TE and wing tight end also releasing to the edge to stretch the defense horizontally. The primary read is the HB reading the play side edge block first: if the defense flows hard to the sideline, the back plants and cuts back inside off the zone flow rather than trying to outrun leverage.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check linebacker depth and shade: linebackers stacked tight to the box with fast flow tendencies are prime targets for the cutback since they will overrun the play side gap. Watch the defensive ends and edge defenders for contain discipline, if they crash hard inside on the snap the stretch bounces outside easily. Post-snap, user the play side linebacker or strong safety to fill the cutback lane, since that defender is the primary threat to blow up this concept if the CPU blockers get reached. Heavy inside blitzes and A gap pressure defeat this play before zone flow develops, so recognize double A gap looks or Cover 0 pre-snap and consider checking to a quick pass instead. Teams with disciplined edge setters and a scraping Mike linebacker who stays gap sound will shut down the cutback and force the HB to try to outrun leverage to the sideline.
Usage Tips
Run this out of run heavy personnel on early downs when you want to test defensive line gap discipline and edge contain. Check the defensive front pre-snap: if you see a 4-3 Under or heavy front with the strong safety walked down, expect quick flow and set up the cutback lane. Use the right stick to manually control the HB's aiming point if the CPU blocking gets you stuck dancing behind the line, since patience on the cutback wins reps against overpursuing linebackers. Pair this with HB Inside Zone and HB Counter Wk in the same set to keep linebackers honest and prevent them from keying the stretch flow every snap. Best used on first and second and medium when the defense hasn't shown a heavy blitz look, since extra rushers can beat the reach blocks before the zone develops.
