Breakdown

PA Y Corner is a play-action shot play out of Singleback Wing Tight Z that sells the run fake before working a corner-post combo to the play side. Off the fake, the outside receiver runs a deep corner route while the Y (tight end) works from in-line across the formation on a deep crossing route that breaks toward the post area, and the backside receiver runs a wheel-style flat to deep sideline route to stretch the field horizontally. The primary read progression starts with the corner route, then works to the crossing route from the Y as the deep zone rotates, with the flat/wheel route as a checkdown against soft coverage underneath. This is a play-action man and zone beater designed to hit deep against single-high safety looks.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing single-high or two-high safety alignment since single-high leaves the corner route with more room to work. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they bite hard on the run fake it opens up the Y crossing route underneath the deep coverage. User the deep half or deep third defender if you are on defense, since the corner route is designed to split the difference between the corner and safety. Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells with disciplined deep defenders can take away the corner route, forcing the quarterback to check down to the flat route. Watch for a delayed blitz off the edge, since the play-action fake can leave the offensive line vulnerable if the defense brings extra rushers post-snap.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs like 1st or 2nd and medium when defenses expect run action off the play fake.

Check pre-snap for single-high safety alignment since the corner and crossing route combo attacks the seams vacated by that deep defender.

If the corner sees press man on the outside receiver, hot route him to a quick out to beat the jam before he can get vertical.

Pair this with HB Inside Zone or HB Power O earlier in a series so the defense keys run action before you dial up the shot play.

Against zone shells, prioritize the Y crossing route since it settles between the underneath zone drops and the deep safety.
