HB Counter U is a Power Run play out of Singleback Wing Tight Z that pulls the backside guard and uses the H-back/wing to lead through the hole, kicking out the edge defender while the fullback or lead blocker seals the point of attack. The HB takes a counter step away from the play call before pressing back against the grain, forcing linebackers to flow the wrong way and creating a cutback lane. This is a base run play, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and the primary read is the HB's aiming point off the pullers: press the hole hard, then read the kickout block and lead blocker to decide between bouncing outside or cutting up inside.
Defensive Reads
Watch the play side linebacker depth at the snap, if he flows hard with the counter step you have a clean lane once the pullers get outside. Key the edge defender's reaction to the wing/H-back kickout block, a slow read here means the corner blocker gets a clean angle and the run bounces outside easily. Against a 3-4 look or defenses with heavy inside linebacker blitzes, this play beats slow-reacting Mike linebackers but struggles against disciplined gap-sound fronts that stay home. Odd or bear fronts with an extra defender crashing the backside guard's pull lane will shut this down since the puller loses his blocking angle. Watch for a user-controlled safety sitting in the alley, since Madden defenders in man or zone alike often cheat down on counter action and can blow up the cutback lane if the HB presses too long before cutting.
Usage Tips
Use this play against defenses showing aggressive linebacker flow or overplayed run fits to the play side, since the counter action punishes downhill pursuit. Check the box count pre-snap and if the defense is stacked with 8 in the box, consider audibling to a play-action shot off this same look instead. On early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short, this play sets up misdirection later in the drive once defenders start keying the counter step. Pair it with HB Counter Wk and PA Rams Counter from the same set so the defense cannot sit on backside pursuit or bite too hard on the counter action. If you see linebackers cheating to the play side pre-snap, be ready to user the fullback or H-back lead blocker to seal the alley defender and manually cut the HB up inside.
