Defensive Reads
Watch for linebackers flowing hard to the play side immediately after the snap, that flow confirms they respect the run action and are vulnerable to the fake. Key the weak side safety, if he stays home and does not bite on the zone fake this concept has no room to develop and should be avoided. Look for man coverage on the flare route defender, a linebacker in man coverage on the back out of the backfield is a mismatch the offense wants to exploit. Beware of a defense that shows run blitz or crashes the edge, a fast unblocked defender off the weak side can blow up the fake before the QB fully executes the roll. Zone shells with disciplined linebackers who sit and read the mesh point rather than crashing down will shut this play down since the fake loses its impact.
Usage Tips
Call this play after establishing HB Stretch or HB Zone Wk earlier in the drive so the defense respects the run fake and linebackers step up on the play action.
Use this on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short when defenses are stacking the box to stop outside zone runs.
Check safety depth pre-snap, if both safeties are sitting deep in a two high shell the run fake will hold linebackers longer and open up the underneath flare route.
Motion the HB or use pre-snap shifts to bait linebackers into overplaying the stretch direction before the snap.
Pair this call with Fk Cheat HB Counter in the same game plan so defenders cannot key run fake direction and start jumping run action late.
