PA Jet Sweep out of Singleback Tight Y Off shows jet motion across the formation to sell the sweep fake before working into a play-action passing concept. Off the fake, the outside receiver runs a deep crosser over the middle of the field while the TE runs a corner/post breaking route from the slot, and the backside X receiver clears vertically up the seam to hold the safety. The HB stays in as the underneath checkdown option on a wide flat route after the jet fake, giving you a built-in outlet if the deep routes are covered. This is a play-action man beater at its core, with the crosser as the primary read against man coverage and the flat route to the HB as the answer versus a hard blitz or zone drops that take away the deep routes.
Defensive Reads
Read linebacker depth and flow at the snap: if they bite hard on the jet motion and run fake, the middle of the field opens up for the crosser and corner route. Watch for a user-controlled defender sitting in a shallow zone or spy near the line, since that player can jump the flat route to the HB and blow up your checkdown. Identify single-high versus two-high safety shells pre-snap: single-high defenses are more vulnerable to the deep crosser since the safety has more ground to cover, while two-high shells can rob the corner route from the TE. Against Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone drops, look for the underneath zone defenders sitting in the crosser's lane, since a good user linebacker can undercut that route if the fake does not sell. If the defense shows an aggressive edge blitz pre-snap, expect the protection to break down quickly, so be ready to hit the HB flat route as a fast outlet rather than holding the ball for the deeper routes.
Usage Tips
Use jet motion pre-snap to bait linebackers and safeties into flowing hard toward the sweep side, which opens up the crosser and corner route behind them.
Check the safety alignment before the snap: if you see two deep safeties holding their spots instead of crashing down, expect the run fake to be sniffed out and prioritize the deep crosser as your first read.
Against man coverage, trust the crosser working across the field since it naturally creates separation off the play-action rub and traffic near the line.
If the defense brings pressure off the edge, get the ball out quickly to the HB in the flat since he is your built-in checkdown against blitzes that beat the protection.
