PA Jet Y Leak is a play-action shot play out of Singleback Tight Y Off with 11 personnel that uses jet motion across the formation to sell run action before the QB works a leak concept out of the backfield. Off the fake, the TE runs a deep leak route that climbs vertically up the seam before breaking toward the corner, the boundary receiver runs a corner route that stems outside and up the sideline, and the flat receiver runs a shallow drift route underneath to give the QB a checkdown against blitz pressure. This is a play-action shot designed to attack single high shells and man coverage, with the primary read going to the TE leak route on the vertical stem, then the corner route on the outside, and the underneath drift route as the emergency valve.
Defensive Reads
Watch the flow of the linebackers at the snap, if they bite hard on the jet motion and run fake, the middle of the field opens up for the TE leak route right through the vacated seam. Key the free safety depth and width presnap, a single high safety who steps up expecting run action gives you the biggest window for the leak route to work behind him. Identify man coverage by watching the cornerback shadow the corner route off the line, if the corner turns and runs with no help over the top this beats man coverage cleanly. Look for a robber or lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field, since that user controlled defender can jump the leak route if he reads the play-action fake quickly. This play struggles against a hard cover 2 or cover 4 shell with two deep safeties who stay disciplined, since both the corner route and leak route get squeezed by numbers over the top.
Usage Tips
Run this on early downs like first or second and medium to keep the defense honest against the run fake from the jet motion. Check the pre snap safety alignment before the snap, if you see one high safety cheating toward the field or a single high shell rotate, this is your green light to throw the TE leak route with confidence. If the defense shows two deep safeties presnap, be ready to check down to the underneath drift route since the corner and leak routes will be squeezed by the extra deep defender. Use the jet motion to bait linebackers into flowing with the sweep action, which opens up the seam for the TE leak route against zone drops. Pair this play with PA Jet Sweep and Jet Sweep from the same set so the defense has to respect the actual jet sweep run before you hit them with the leak shot off similar action.
