Jet Sweep out of Singleback Tight Y Off sends the motion man in jet action across the formation before the snap, and the ball is handed off in stride to the flanking receiver as he crosses the backfield. The line executes a lateral zone run scheme, with the tight end and playside tackle reaching outside to seal the edge while the backside blockers cut off pursuit. This is a pure run play designed to attack the perimeter with speed before the defense can flow, so the primary read is simply whether the edge is sealed: if the alignment gives you a two way go, follow the lead blocker outside, and if the edge defender crashes hard, cut it up inside the block.
Defensive Reads
Key the playside defensive end and outside linebacker before the snap, since a wide crash off the edge means the ball carrier should cut inside the block rather than trying to outrun the pursuit. Watch for defenders assigned to spy or gap exchange on jet motion, since disciplined defenses will have an edge player sit and wait rather than chase the motion, which shuts this play down quickly. Use a user controlled defender to shadow the jet motion man pre-snap if you suspect the sweep is coming, since jumping the read early can blow the play up for a loss. Against Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with fast flowing corners, the edge speed of this play is less effective since the flat defender can rally outside before the ball carrier turns the corner. Look for overpursuit from linebackers flowing hard to the sweep side, since that same aggressive flow is what makes the companion play action and fake jet concepts in this set so effective on the following snap.
Usage Tips
Snap the ball right as the jet motion reaches the backfield hole to maximize the speed in space before the defense can flow to the edge.
Use this against defenses that are showing base fronts or slow flowing linebackers, since the outside speed of the jet motion punishes teams that do not have edge defenders with disciplined leverage.
Pair Jet Sweep with PA Jet Sweep and Zone Fake Jet from this same set so defenders start biting on jet motion, then hit them with the fake once they overcommit to defending the sweep.
Run this on early downs, first and second and short to medium yardage, to keep the offense on schedule and to bait aggressive linebacker blitzes that overrun the play.
If the defense is stacking the box or showing edge pressure pre-snap, check to HB Dive or Inside Zone Split from the same set instead since a numbers disadvantage on the perimeter kills the sweep.
