Breakdown

Double Move Cross out of Singleback Tight Y Off lines up with two receivers boundary to boundary and a lone HB in the backfield for protection. The left X runs a sit-and-go double move, breaking outside then snapping vertical up the seam to attack a hard-squatting corner or shallow zone defender, while the right slot runs a deep vertical seam stem straight up the numbers. Both outside receivers run shallow drag routes underneath breaking away from each other to clear out horizontal zone throwing lanes and give the QB an outlet if the double move is covered. This is a man beater first, designed to punish aggressive corners and underneath zone defenders who jump the double move receiver's first break, with the primary read progression starting on the double move route, then the vertical seam, and finally working down to the shallow crossers as checkdowns.

Defensive Reads

Watch the corner aligned over the double move receiver at the snap, if he bites hard on the first outside break he is beat deep and the safety needs to rotate over immediately. Key the middle linebacker or hook defender drop depth, a shallow drop invites the double move receiver to work in behind him. If the coverage shows two deep safeties pre-snap this is likely Cover 2 or Cover 4, in which case the crossers underneath become the primary answer since the double move will run into help. Diagnose blitz packages by checking the box count, if the defense brings extra rushers the quarterback needs to get to the shallow crossers quickly since the deep routes take too long to develop. Watch for a user-controlled defender sitting in a shallow zone or lurking in the crossing lane, this play is vulnerable to a spy or rat who reads the quarterback's eyes and jumps the crossers.

Usage Tips

Call this on second and long or third and medium when defenses are more likely to sit in man coverage or squat zones expecting a shorter route.

Read the corner over your double move receiver before the snap, if he is playing tight man with no safety help over the top this route wins immediately.

Use the vertical seam route as your first read against single high safety looks like Cover 3 or Cover 1, since the seam splits the hole between the deep safety and underneath linebackers.

Hot route one of the shallow crossers into a spot or curl if you are facing heavy zone coverage that clogs the crossing lanes underneath.

Pair this play with PA Cheat Cross or PA Cheat Post Cross earlier in a series so the defense respects the play-action boot before you come back with this straight drop concept.
