HB Zone Wk is an inside zone run out of Singleback Tight Y Off, weakside variant, with the offensive line stepping in unison to the play side and the fullback path or TE arc sealing the edge. The diagram shows the outside receivers stalk blocking or running off coverage while the running back reads the frontside combo blocks and picks his gap based on flow from the defensive line and linebackers. This is a run play, not a play-action or RPO, and the primary read progression is a one cut, backside cutback design where the HB presses the play side A gap, reads the double team at the point of attack, then decides between bouncing outside or cutting back against overpursuing linebackers.
Watch the defensive line alignment pre-snap. A shaded nose tackle or 3 technique to the play side clogs the frontside gap and should push the read to a cutback. Key linebacker depth. Linebackers stacked tight behind the line are likely to fill fast and get sealed by zone steps, opening cutback lanes for the ball carrier. Identify if the defense is in a run blitz or nano blitz look with a linebacker or safety creeping into the box late. This is the fastest way to blow up zone runs before the double team forms. Check safety rotation post-snap. If both safeties stay deep in a two high shell, the box is light and this run should hit for positive yardage against base fronts. Watch for user-controlled defenders flowing hard to the play side call. If the human defender overcommits, cut this back immediately since the backside blocking is designed to seal for exactly that scenario.
Check the box count pre-snap and only run this into light boxes of six or fewer defenders since the offensive line is working zone steps and cannot handle extra unblocked defenders in the run fit.
Use motion or a hard count to identify if linebackers are keying run flow, then attack the backside cutback lane if they overshift to the play side call.
Pair this with HB Dive and HB Stretch Wk from the same set so linebackers cannot sit on one zone landmark, forcing them to respect both frontside and backside cutback lanes.
On the stick, user the fullback or lead blocker to identify the first free hitter at the second level and manually seal him instead of trusting the CPU logic in the hole.
Run this on early downs in normal personnel to stay ahead of the chains, and use PA Boot Slide or PA Deep Cross afterward off the same run action to keep linebackers honest.
