Omaha out of Singleback Tight Y Off is a five man route flood concept with no play action shown in the diagram. The backside X runs a comeback while the slot receiver on that side runs a flat route underneath it, the TE runs a vertical seam up the middle, and the outside receiver to the strong side breaks off an out cut while the far outside receiver on that side runs a deep out to the boundary. This is a zone beater built to flood one side high low while the seam route occupies the middle of the field, and the primary read progression starts with the seam, then works to the strong side out and deep out combo, using the comeback as a late breakout answer against soft coverage.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap check safety depth, if both safeties are deep and rotated toward the strong side this indicates cover 2 or cover 4 which the flat and out combo can exploit underneath. Watch the flow of the middle linebacker at the snap, aggressive blitz timing off the edge or up the gut leaves the seam route wide open for a quick strike. If the cornerback on the strong side sinks deep into a zone drop the underneath out route becomes the easy completion, but if he sits flat the deep out over the top is the answer. User controlled defenders sitting in a shallow zone or lurking near the middle of the field can jump the seam route, so track the user before committing to that throw. Press man coverage with no safety help over the top can shut down the comeback route since the defender can mirror the break, in that situation check down to the flat route working underneath.
Usage Tips
Use Omaha on second and long or third and medium when you expect zone coverage since the flood concept on the strong side stresses cover 3 and cover 2 sideline defenders.
Key the flow of the linebackers pre-snap, if they are shaded toward the strong side flood you can hot route the TE seam into a quick option to attack the vacated middle.
Pair this play with PA Flood or Drive Flood in your play calling sequence since both show a similar flood look but Omaha removes the play action fake for a quicker release against blitz heavy tendencies.
Against man coverage look immediately to the comeback route since the sudden break creates natural separation versus a cornerback playing outside leverage.
Alternate Omaha with Stick or Stick Switch on early downs to keep the defense guessing between quick game and the deeper flood shots this play provides.
