RPO Alert Orbit is a run pass option out of Shotgun Y Off Trio Wk that pairs an inside handoff look with a two man orbit motion read on the perimeter. The diagram shows the motion man sweeping across the formation with a bubble style flare route while the outside receiver on that side stems vertically before breaking flat toward the sideline, giving the quarterback a horizontal stretch to key against overpursuing linebackers. The offensive line shows run blocking steps up front, so this is a true alert RPO: the quarterback reads the flow of the second level defenders and either hands off the ball on the interior run or pulls it to throw the flare or flat route based on numbers.
Pre-snap, identify if the defense has a linebacker shaded toward the motion side, that is the exact defender the RPO read is designed to attack. Watch safety depth before the snap, if a single high safety is stacked deep the underneath flare and flat combo has room to work against man coverage. Post-snap, key the flowing linebacker's first two steps, if he bites on the run fake the quarterback should pull and throw the flare immediately. This play struggles against disciplined zone teams that keep linebackers at home and let the cornerback or slot defender squeeze the flare route from depth. User controlled defenders who stay patient and shadow the motion man instead of jumping the run fake will take away both options, forcing a checkdown or a live handoff into a stacked box.
Check the box count before the snap and use the motion to identify if the defense rotates a linebacker or defensive back to follow the orbit man, that rotation tells you whether to hand off or throw.
If the linebackers crash down hard on run action, pull the ball immediately and hit the flare route in the alley before the flowing defender can redirect.
This play works best on early downs and in run heavy personnel packages where defenses are conditioned to fill the run gap first.
Pair this with Orbit RPO Buck Swing and Orbit PA Cross from the same set so the defense sees the same motion look but has to defend different answers, keeping linebackers honest.
Against teams that spam nano blitzes, use this as a changeup since the quick flare read gets the ball out before extra rushers arrive.
