RPO Peek Slant is a run pass option built off inside zone action, giving the quarterback a run key and a peek slant thrown behind it. The diagram shows the outside receiver running a deep vertical clear out while the slot receiver runs a slant across the middle, with the QB reading the second level defender flowing toward the mesh point to decide between the give and the peek throw. The tight end or flanker on the boundary runs a vertical route as a bail option, and the running back's mesh with the QB gives the inside zone look up front. Primary read is the play side linebacker: if he sits or crashes down on the run action, pull it and hit the peek slant immediately, otherwise hand it off.

Defensive Reads

Key the play side linebacker's depth and leverage presnap, if he is stacked directly over the slant window this RPO gets tougher to hit. Watch for a linebacker who bites hard on run action, that is the tell that the peek slant will be wide open behind him. Man coverage on the slot defender with no underneath help is a green light for the peek throw since the slant will separate immediately off the break. Zone shells with a linebacker sitting in the throwing lane or a robber defender lurking underneath the slant should push you toward the run element instead. Watch for blitzing linebackers or a crashing safety, since a clean run fit with numbers in the box takes away the give and forces a rushed peek read.

Usage Tips

Presnap, identify the play side linebacker's alignment and depth since he is the key defender for the RPO read.

If the defense shows a stacked box with the linebacker sitting in the peek slant window, take the give and trust the inside zone blocking.

If the linebacker crashes down on run action or the box is light, pull and fire the peek slant before he can recover, this beats aggressive run fits and man coverage underneath.

Use this on early downs in normal personnel looks to keep the defense honest, then sequence into RPO Zone Peek or RPO Read Bubble to attack different flat and slant windows off the same zone action.

Against zone heavy defenses, hot route the outside vertical into a comeback or hitch if the corner sits deep, giving you a quick answer versus soft zone shells.
