Full House

Overview

Pistol Full House is the heaviest look in the Pistol formation, replacing the standard two and three receiver spacing with a full backfield: quarterback at depth in the Pistol alignment, a running back directly behind him, and two backs (fullback and second back) flanking the quarterback in a tight cluster. Personnel is 30, meaning three running backs on the field with a tight end and a single receiver. That alignment forces the defense to declare its intentions early because there is no spread element to stress the numbers horizontally, and it commonly pulls a base 4-3 or 3-4 look with the safeties squeezed toward the box.

What separates Full House from the other Pistol sets is the volume of option and misdirection concepts it unlocks. Triple Option, Tr Opt Switch, Zone Read, and Read Option Wk all attack unblocked edge defenders with the quarterback as a live ball carrier, while Counter Lead, HB Slam, and HB Off Tackle give you downhill gap scheme runs with two lead blockers. The Pistol depth is the key mechanic here: the running back is already at a full head of steam by the mesh point, so the read happens faster than it does from under center, and the extra backs let you insert a lead blocker on either side without motioning anyone.

The pass menu is built entirely off the run threats. PA Boot, PA X Post, PA Comebacks, PA Comeback Flood, PA HB Wheel, and PA Flood FB Slip all sell the gap scheme run before releasing backs into space, which creates the matchup advantage in this set: linebackers and safeties who have crashed the box get isolated one on one against a leaking fullback or a back on a wheel. The single receiver split wide is your isolation target on X Post and Deep Curl, and against man coverage he is almost always facing a defender with zero inside help because the extra safety is committed to the run fit.

Strengths

  • Triple Option, Tr Opt Switch, and Read Option Wk punish opponents who user a defensive lineman or crash the edge, since the unblocked read defender is the one you are optioning off and there is no way to cover both the give and the keep with one player.
  • PA HB Wheel and PA Flood FB Slip are premium man beaters because linebackers in man coverage on a back have to fight through play action traffic before they can turn and run, which produces separation deep and in the flat simultaneously.
  • PA Comeback Flood floods a single side with three levels (deep, intermediate comeback, flat), which shreds Cover 3 and Cover 2 flat defenders who cannot cover the seam and the sideline on the same snap.
  • The isolated X receiver on PA X Post and Deep Curl gets one on one leverage because 30 personnel drags safeties down into the run fit, so a hot route to a fade or a slot corner on that side turns into a true iso rep.
  • Counter Lead and HB Slam with two available lead blockers create real numbers advantages at the point of attack, and you can flip the strength with a pre-snap flip or motion to attack whichever side the defense underloads.

Weaknesses

  • Only one true receiver is on the field, so if the opponent plays disciplined man coverage with a good user-controlled defender over the top, your entire pass menu collapses to short back releases and checkdowns.
  • Heavy blitz packages, especially inside pressure and nano blitzes, get home fast because your protection is built for play action rather than max drop back, and the extra backs are often releasing rather than staying in to help.
  • Third and long is nearly unplayable from this set unless you hot route into it, since the deepest concepts are play action based and the defense will not honor the run fake in obvious passing situations.
  • Opponents who recognize 30 personnel can substitute in run stopping personnel and commit both safeties to the box, which takes away the numbers advantage on Counter Lead, HB Off Tackle, and HB Slam.
  • The option plays are read dependent, and a user-controlled edge defender who plays the mesh point patiently can bait a bad give or force a quarterback keep into unblocked contact, which puts your passer at injury risk.

Usage Tips

Use this as a short yardage and second down changeup rather than a base set: get to Full House when you have the lead and want to control clock, or on third and one to four when the defense has to respect the run fit.

Read the safety depth pre-snap. Two safeties inside the numbers and near the box means the option and gap runs are still live; a single high shell with a corner pressed on your X means take the shot with PA X Post or hot route the isolated receiver on a fade.

Against heavy inside blitz tendencies, hot route one of the flanking backs to a flat or block assignment before the snap on PA Boot and PA Comebacks so you have an immediate outlet and better protection integrity.

Alternate Zone Read and Triple Option against the same defensive look. Once your opponent starts crashing the read defender to stop the give, the keep and the pitch both become free yards on the perimeter.

Pair Counter Lead with PA Flood FB Slip in the same series. The fullback slip is a direct answer to the linebacker who over commits to the counter action, and it puts him in conflict on every subsequent snap.
