PA Flood FB Slip is a play-action flood concept run from the Pistol Full House, 30 personnel look. Off the run fake, the play sends three receivers into a vertical flood to one side: a corner route stemming from the boundary, a deep vertical from the middle receiver that breaks outward into a corner route stacking the top of the flood, and the fullback slipping out of the backfield underneath into the flat as the checkdown. On the backside, an isolated receiver runs a quick out to hold the corner and give you a single-read escape route. The primary progression starts with the deep corner route breaking outside, works down to the underneath flat route from the fullback, and ends with the backside out route if the flood side is capped.
Defensive Reads
Read the free safety pre-snap: single high shells invite the deep corner route since the flood overloads one half of the field with three vertical stems. Watch the flat defender and outside linebacker at the snap. If they widen with the fullback's slip release, the deep corner and out route both open up behind them. Cover 3 defenses struggle with this concept because the corner route and vertical route stack the deep third defender, forcing him to pick one and surrendering the other. Man coverage with no safety help gets exposed by the deep corner route beating outside leverage, but tight man coverage with a deep safety rotated over the top can undercut the throw if the quarterback holds too long. Disguised zone blitzes that drop a defensive lineman into the shallow flat can take away the fullback's slip route, so identify hot pressure pre-snap and be ready to climb the progression to the backside out route quickly.
Usage Tips
Run this out of play action on early downs when you have established the run game from Full House personnel to keep linebackers honest and slow their pass drops.
Check the deep half safety before the snap: if he is rotated away from the flood side, throw the deep corner route immediately for an explosive gain.
Use the fullback slip route as your answer versus zone blitzes and Cover 3 sink drops since he releases late and settles in soft spots underneath the flood.
Hot route the backside out into a quick slant or speed out if the defense shows man coverage with no safety help over the top, giving you a faster underneath answer.
