Breakdown

PA Boot out of Pistol Full House sells the play-action fake to the backfield before the QB rolls out to the right, dragging the pocket with him. The diagram shows a corner route breaking hard upfield from the boot side, a deep out cutting toward the sideline underneath it, and a shallow drag crossing from the backside all the way through the formation as a checkdown. This is a play-action rollout designed to attack zone defenses by moving the QB off his spot and forcing linebackers and safeties to declare on run action while the corner and out routes stretch the boundary vertically and horizontally. The primary read is the corner route first, working down to the deep out, and finally the drag as the outlet if the pocket collapses or the defense rolls coverage over the top.

Defensive Reads

Watch for two high safeties pre-snap, which signals a zone shell that can cap the corner route and force you to check the deep out or drag. If the boot side cornerback bails into a deep zone at the snap, the corner route is likely covered, so look immediately to the deep out sitting underneath. Man coverage with a linebacker or safety spying the QB is the biggest threat to this play since the rollout eliminates half the field and a contain defender can force an early throw or sack. A fast edge defender crashing the rollout lane pre-snap or a linebacker blitzing off the boot side can collapse the pocket before the corner route develops, so be ready to check down to the drag quickly. Cover 3 with a hard-flowing flat defender can undercut the deep out, so trust the corner route or drag depending on how the flat defender reacts to the run fake.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs like first or second and medium to keep the defense honest against the run-heavy Full House personnel.

Check the safety alignment pre-snap: if you see two high safeties sitting deep, the corner route may be capped, so plan to work the deep out or drag instead.

If linebackers are stacked tight to the box expecting run, this boot action will pull them up and open a throwing lane for the corner route over the top.

Hot route the backside drag deeper if you are facing heavy zone drops so it clears underneath coverage as a true outlet instead of getting picked off in traffic.

Pair this with HB Off Tackle and Counter Lead earlier in a series so the run fake actually holds the second level, then dial up PA Boot once the defense starts crashing downhill.
