Breakdown

Tr Opt Switch is a true triple option run play out of the Pistol Full House with 30 personnel, giving the offense a fullback and halfback both in the backfield alongside the QB. The diagram shows the QB reading down the line with a give/keep mesh to the FB, then a pitch option to the HB who bends outside once the QB clears the mesh point, while the offensive line fires out to seal the edge for the perimeter run. This is a pure run play with no pass option, and the primary read progression is FB dive first, then QB keep or pitch based on how the defensive end and alley defender flow to the mesh.

Defensive Reads

Watch the defensive end at the snap since his crash or contain decision determines the QB give or keep read. Overloaded fronts with extra defenders in the box can shut down the FB dive portion of the option, forcing the QB to pull and attack the edge. Track the flow of the alley defender or outside linebacker toward the pitch man, since a disciplined defender staying home on the HB kills the perimeter option. User-controlled defensive ends who sit and read the mesh instead of crashing hard force a slower, more predictable progression that defenses can jump. Look for defenses that spy the QB with a linebacker, since that eliminates the keep read and forces the offense into the dive or pitch only.

Usage Tips

Run this out of Pistol Full House on early downs when you want to establish tempo and keep the defense guessing between three ball carriers.

Pre-snap, identify the defensive end assigned to the mesh point since he dictates the first read between the FB dive and the QB keep.

If the defense shows a heavy box with linebackers crashing downhill, key the alley defender to decide between pulling the ball or pitching outside to the HB.

Pair this with Counter Lead and HB Off Tackle from the same set so the defense has to respect multiple gap schemes out of identical personnel and alignment.

Use this on second and short or first and ten to stay ahead of the sticks, since the triple option mesh takes time to develop and needs manageable yardage.
