HB Off Tackle out of the Pistol Full House is a downhill gap run that attacks the edge of the offensive line, with the fullback leading through the hole to seal off the first defender outside the tackle. The diagram shows the HB taking a slight lateral path before hitting the tackle box, with the FB clearing a lane so the back can bend it outside if the alley is clogged. This is a run play designed to punish light boxes and overaggressive edge defenders, not a play-action or RPO look. The primary read progression is: press the off tackle hole first, then bounce outside off the FB's block if the DE or OLB squeezes down hard.
Defensive Reads
Watch the strong side defensive end and OLB depth pre-snap: if they are crashing hard inside, the off tackle lane will be tight and the back needs to bounce outside the FB's block. Key the play side linebacker's run fit trigger. A slow-reacting Mike or Sam linebacker gets sealed easily by the fullback, opening a clean crease. This run beats light boxes and defenses in nickel or dime personnel that are light in the box against 30 personnel formations. Stacked fronts and run blitzes from the strong side, especially with a linebacker crashing the C gap pre-snap, can blow this up before the FB gets a clean angle. User-controlled defenders spying the mesh point or sitting in the hole off tackle can jump the play, so vary tempo and mix in Counter Lead from the same set to keep defenders honest.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap and only run this into 6 or fewer defenders in the box for a clean numbers advantage.
Use the FB lead block as your visual key: if he climbs and seals the edge defender, stick with the designed off tackle lane instead of bouncing early.
Great short yardage and early down call (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) to keep defenses honest and set up play-action later in the series.
