HB Slam is a straight downhill dive run out of the Pistol Full House formation with 30 personnel, showing two backs flanking the QB behind the pistol alignment. The blocking scheme shows the offensive line stepping forward with a direct interior gap read, with the fullback leading through the hole to seal the first threat while the offset back takes a tight dive path behind the QB. This is a pure run play with no pass option, designed as an inside power concept to attack a light box and beat aggressive linebacker fits between the tackles.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is in a base 4-3 or 3-4 look with two off-ball linebackers, since a stacked Mike over the play side gap is the biggest threat to this run. Watch safety depth before the snap, if both safeties are deep in a two high shell the box should be light and this dive concept should hit quickly. Post-snap, key the fullback's block on the first linebacker to the play side, if he gets immediate depth on his defender the dive lane opens fast. This play struggles against a stacked box with eight defenders or a run blitz sending extra defenders through the A or B gap, since there is no cutback design built into the diagram. User-controlled defenders shooting inside gaps pre-snap are the biggest red flag, if you see aggressive gap penetration from a user defender at the snap this play will get blown up before the fullback can get his block set.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap and only run this against six or fewer defenders in the box to avoid getting stuffed. Use this play on early downs like first and ten or short yardage third down situations where a physical inside run sets up your play-action shots later. Motion is not needed here since the fullback lead already provides a hat on the first linebacker, so focus your pre-snap attention on identifying if the Mike linebacker is stacked or shaded to a gap. Pair HB Slam with PA Boot or PA X Post from the same Full House Pistol set so the defense has to respect the dive fake before you attack off it with play-action shots downfield. Against teams that load the box on early downs, mix in Zone Read or Triple Option from this set to punish overpursuit and keep the defense honest.
