PA Comebacks is a play-action pass out of the Pistol Full House formation with 30 personnel, using the run fake to hold the linebackers and safeties before attacking the perimeter with comeback routes. From the diagram, the outside receiver to the left releases vertical then breaks back outside at roughly 12 yards for a comeback, while the slot to his inside runs a deep vertical seam straight up the numbers as a clear-out or big-play option. On the backside, the isolated receiver runs an identical comeback route, breaking outside after selling the vertical stem. This is a zone beater designed to sit down in the soft spot behind cornerbacks playing off coverage or squatting zone defenders, with the primary read progression starting to the boundary comeback, then working to the seam route if the defense bites hard on the play-action fake, and finally the backside comeback as the outlet.
Defensive Reads
Check pre-snap safety depth, if both safeties are shaded deep past 10 yards the comeback routes will have room to sit down before the corner can close. Watch cornerback alignment at the snap, corners playing tight man coverage can jump the comeback break and undercut the throw, so avoid this play against press man unless you have a hot route adjustment ready. Key linebacker flow after the play-action fake, if linebackers bite hard on the run action the middle of the field opens up for the seam route as the big-play alternative. Identify zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4 pre-snap, these are the ideal shells since the comeback settles into the soft spot behind the corner and in front of the deep safety. Post-snap, watch for a user-controlled defender sitting in a lurk position near the comeback break point, since a smart user can jump the route if the quarterback stares it down too long.
Usage Tips
Sell the play-action fake by holding the ball and letting the running back cross the formation, this freezes linebackers and opens throwing lanes for both comebacks.
Attack cornerbacks playing off man or soft zone at 8 yards or deeper, since the comeback route creates natural separation when the corner is backpedaling.
Use the seam route as your home run shot if the safety bites down on the run fake, this is where PA Comebacks turns into an explosive gain against overaggressive linebacker flow.
Pair this play with HB Off Tackle or Counter Lead earlier in a series to sell the run threat, then dial up PA Comebacks once the defense starts stacking the box.
Best called on second or third and medium when defenses are more likely to sit in zone shells and respect the play-action fake, avoid throwing into aggressive man coverage with underneath lurk defenders.
