HB Stretch out of Singleback Wing Stack is an outside zone run play with the offensive line flowing laterally to the play side while the HB presses the edge before reading his blocks to cut upfield. The diagram shows the two stacked receivers to the left running vertical routes to occupy the deep defenders and clear space, while the HB path (red arrow) stretches wide before angling back inside off the zone blocking flow. This is a pure zone run scheme, not a man beater or RPO, and the primary read progression is the HB reading the play side edge defender first, then working through the double team at the point of attack, and finally scanning the linebacker flow to decide between bouncing outside or cutting up through the alley.
Defensive Reads
Check for stacked or bunched linebackers cheating to the play side flow, which signals the defense is selling out on outside zone Watch the play side defensive end and outside linebacker leverage, if they stay wide and squeeze the edge the cutback lane inside becomes the better run path Identify single high safety shells versus two high shells, single high alignments are more vulnerable since the safety has to fill the alley alone User controlled defenders flowing hard to string the play out wide are a key indicator to bounce this run outside for an explosive gain Watch for a fast flowing Mike linebacker or a delayed backside contain defender crashing down, both are common counters that shut down the cutback read on HB Stretch
Usage Tips
Attack light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box, since outside zone needs numbers advantage on the perimeter to work
Use the stacked receiver vertical releases to hold single high safeties and outside cornerbacks, opening up the cutback lane for the HB
Pair this with HB Power O and HB Dive from the same set so the defense cannot key on zone flow versus gap scheme downhill runs
Best called on early downs, 1st and 10 or 2nd and short, to keep the defense honest and set up PA Jet Sweep or Zone Fake Jet later in the series
Motion or shift out of the Wing Stack look pre-snap to bait linebackers into overcommitting to the play side before the snap
