Jet Sweep out of Singleback Wing Stack is a pure outside run play built around pre-snap motion. The diagram shows the motion man crossing behind the backfield and receiving the handoff on the move, with the offensive line and TEs sealing the edge to spring the ball carrier wide toward the sideline. This is a run play designed to beat overpursuit and slow-flowing linebackers rather than a specific man or zone coverage, using speed and misdirection to outrun defenders to the perimeter. The primary read is the edge: the ball carrier keys the flow of the outside blockers and either bounces outside if the edge is sealed or cuts up inside if the defense overplays the sweep.
Defensive Reads
Watch for user-controlled defensive ends and outside linebackers crashing down the line, since a disciplined edge defender who stays home can blow this play up before it develops. Check safety depth pre-snap; if a safety is sitting close to the box or showing run support toward the motion side, expect the edge to be squeezed and consider an audible. Post-snap, track linebacker flow: if they overpursue the motion and flow hard outside, the cutback lane inside becomes the real gain. Man coverage teams that chase the jet motion with a defender across the formation will often leave the edge undermanned, favoring the sweep. Contain-conscious defenses or scrape exchange linebackers who stay square and read the mesh point are the toughest matchup for this concept, since they neutralize both the bounce and the cutback.
Usage Tips
Snap the ball right as the jet motion crosses the formation to maximize the speed differential the sweep needs to beat pursuit angles.
Use this against defenses that show aggressive linebacker flow or overload blitzes, since the misdirection and lateral speed exploit defenders who key the backfield too fast.
Mix this into your play calling after running HB Dive or HB Power O from the same Wing Stack set so linebackers start cheating downhill, then hit them with the Jet Sweep to attack the edge they just vacated.
Best called on early downs or short yardage on the perimeter, first and ten or second and short, when defenses are more likely to sit in base personnel and slower fronts.
Pair with PA Jet Sweep or Zone Fake Jet later in a series once the defense starts flowing hard to the sweep motion, since the fake will hold linebackers and open up play-action shots.
