HB Power O out of Singleback Wing Stack is a gap scheme run play built to pull an extra blocker across the formation and create a numbers advantage at the point of attack. The diagram shows the two receivers running vertical routes up the seams to occupy the deep coverage and clear out the underneath area, while the offensive line and tight ends set up down blocks with a puller kicking out the edge defender to seal the alley. The HB takes a path off the pulling blocker's hip, reading the kickout block first and then working off the down blocks from the frontside guard and tackle. This is strictly a run play with no play-action or RPO element attached in this look.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth and count the box. A single high safety with light box numbers favors the offense, while two safeties down near the line signals a run blitz or crashing front designed to beat gap schemes. Key the play side defensive end and outside linebacker. If they stay wide and squeeze the kickout blocker instead of crashing down, this play struggles to find a lane. Watch for a user-controlled linebacker sitting in the hole reading the pulling guard. A disciplined mike linebacker who reads the pull and fills the backside gap can blow this play up before it develops. Look for defensive fronts with an odd stack or bear front, since extra bodies at the line can clog both the down block and kickout lanes simultaneously. Man coverage on the two vertical routes with no safety help underneath opens up cutback lanes if the defense commits extra defenders to run support, so watch for overpursuit from the backside.
Usage Tips
Use this play on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) when you want to establish tempo and force the defense to respect gap integrity before you start attacking with PA Power O or Zone Fake Jet off the same look.
Check the box count before the snap. If the defense has six or more in the box with no extra safety help over the top, this is a tough matchup, so consider motioning or checking to HB Dive or HB Zone Wk instead.
Identify the alignment of the strong side defensive end and outside linebacker. If they are crashing hard down inside, the kickout block from the puller can whiff, so be ready to bounce the HB outside with the right stick.
Pair this play in your call sheet with PA Power O and PA Fork to keep the defense honest, since both use similar backfield action and force linebackers to hesitate on run fits.
Against aggressive user blitzers flying downhill, delay your handoff timing slightly and trust the puller to clean up the extra rusher before committing to a lane.
