Y Stick out of Singleback Wing Stack 12 personnel gives you a classic stick concept combined with a corner route on the backside. To the strong side, the outside receiver runs a corner route stretching the sideline while the inline tight end or wing runs a quick stick (hitch and settle) underneath. On the weak side, the isolated receiver runs a vertical seam read against the near linebacker to hold the flow. This is a man beater first and a zone beater second, using the stick concept to attack underneath zone defenders while the corner route works over the top of press or trail coverage. The primary read progression starts with the stick route for a quick, high percentage completion, then works to the corner route if the defense sucks down on the shallow stuff, with the backside vertical as a hot read against blitz or single high looks.

Defensive Reads

Watch the flat defender at the snap since he decides whether the stick route or the corner route is open. Against Cover 3, the corner route is your best answer since the deep third defender has to choose between the vertical and the sideline break. Against man coverage, look for a linebacker matched on the backside vertical receiver, that mismatch wins immediately on a hot route or the straight vertical stem. Watch for a nano blitz off the edge since the stick concept releases the tight end or wing quickly, giving you a built in answer if the protection breaks down. If the defense rotates to a two high shell post snap, trust the corner route over the top, but if it stays single high, the stick and vertical become your primary answers.

Usage Tips

Use this on third and short to medium since the stick route sits down quickly and gives you a rhythm throw against Cover 2 or Cover 3 zone drops.

Check the flat defender pre-snap. If the corner or safety is sitting hard on the flat, the stick sits down for an easy pitch and catch before working vertical.

Against man coverage, hot route the backside vertical receiver to a slant or drag if you see a linebacker in coverage on him, since that mismatch is an easy win.

Pair this with PA Dig or PA Power O from the same set to keep linebackers honest, since the run action and play action rollout look mirror the same formation and personnel.

If the defense shows two high safeties pre-snap, prioritize the corner route since Cover 2 often leaves a hole between the flat and deep defenders that the corner route exploits.
