PA Double In Shot runs a play-action fake out of Singleback Wing Stack 12 personnel, showing run action before the QB works a double in concept on the right side. Both the outside receiver and the tight end/slot man break inward on in routes at two levels, a deep in near the numbers and a shorter in underneath, while the backside receiver runs a vertical release up the sideline as a clear out. This is a man beater that punishes linebackers who bite on the run fake, with the primary read starting on the deep in route and working down to the shorter in if the underneath defender sits in the window.
Defensive Reads
Watch linebacker depth immediately after the snap, if they step up hard on the run fake the deep in route will open up behind them for an easy user read. Key the flat defender and any underneath zone droppers, since a sitting linebacker in the shorter in route's lane is the first sign this play is getting taken away and you should progress to the deep in instead. Identify man coverage on the two in route runners pre-snap, since tight man alignment with no safety help over the top is the situation this concept exploits best. Beware of Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with a deep defender sitting on the sideline, since that shell can squeeze the outside in route and force a tighter window on the throw. Look for a user controlled defender lurking in the shallow crossing area, since a spy or rat defender sitting in that zone can jump the shorter in route and turn it into a pick six if you force the ball there.
Usage Tips
Sell the run fake with a slow trigger on the play-action animation, since the double in concept needs the linebackers to step up before the routes clear their zones.
Check the safety alignment pre-snap, if you see two high safeties this play has an easier throwing lane on the deep in against man coverage, if you see single high be ready for the shorter in as the checkdown against zone drops.
Hot route the backside vertical into a comeback or dig if you are facing heavy Cover 3 shells, since the pure vertical will not create a natural throwing window against that shell.
Pair this with HB Dive or HB Zone Wk earlier in a series to get defenders keying run fits, then come back to PA Double In Shot once the linebackers start cheating downhill on early downs.
Best used on second and medium or third and medium, since the double in concept needs a few seconds to develop and a shorter distance makes the underneath in route a safe conversion option.
