The outside receiver runs a deep in that clears out toward the boundary while the inside receiver stacks underneath with a shallower in-cut, creating a natural high-low read on the same side of the field. The backside receiver runs a corner-breaking route off play action that occupies the corner and safety, and the in-line blocker stays in to sell the run fake and protect. Primary read progression starts with the deep in route, then works down to the underneath in if the initial window is closed, with the play-action fake designed to hold linebackers and force zone defenders to widen or bite before the ball is thrown.

Defensive Reads

Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they bite hard on the run fake it opens a huge throwing lane for the deep in route. Identify Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone shells pre-snap, since the stacked in routes are designed to attack the seams between the corner, safety, and linebacker zone drops. Key the flat defender and any user-controlled underneath defender, a good user lurk sitting on the shallow in route can jump the underneath throw and bait a turnover. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge can beat this play if the play-action fake does not hold long enough, so watch pre-snap alignment for overloaded fronts or crashing safeties.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs when the defense is keying on the run to maximize the play action hold on linebackers and box safeties.

Check pre-snap for two high safeties, since the double in concept stresses zone defenders who have to cover multiple horizontal windows in the same area.

If the defense shows single high or man coverage, be ready to hot route the underneath in route into a shallow drag or a slant to give yourself a quicker outlet against man beaters.
