Breakdown

PA Fork is a play-action shot play out of Singleback Wing Stack that sells the run fake before releasing four routes into the pattern. Off the play fake, the backside receiver runs a deep post cutting across the field while the inline receiver from the stack works vertically up the seam, forking the safety in two different directions to create a high low conflict deep. Underneath, one route breaks flat to the boundary while the remaining receiver runs an intermediate crosser working from the numbers back toward the middle, giving the quarterback layered options if the deep shot is covered. This is a play-action man beater that also stresses single high zone shells, and the primary read progression starts with the post to seam fork read deep, then works down to the crossing route and finally the flat as the checkdown.

Defensive Reads

Identify single high safety pre-snap since the fork concept is designed to put him in a bind between the post and the seam route. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, shallow linebackers who bite hard on the play fake open passing lanes for the crossing route and confirm the run fake is working. Key the flat defender or underneath zone defender to see if he sinks with the seam route or stays home on the flat route, this tells you whether the checkdown will be open. Cover 3 with a deep third defender who can only take one vertical threat is highly vulnerable to this fork read, but two high safety shells like Cover 4 or Cover 2 shut down the deep shot and force you into the underneath crosser or flat. Beware disguised blitzes that show run support then drop into man coverage on the play fake, since aggressive user blitzers can close throwing lanes before the deep routes fully develop.

Usage Tips

Use PA Fork on early downs when you have already established the run game with HB Dive or HB Duo out of this same set so the linebackers bite on the play fake.

Check the safety alignment pre-snap, if you see a single high safety, the seam route is likely to win because the fork concept forces him to pick a side.

Against two high shells, hot route the flat route into a quicker option or peek the crossing route first since the deep shots will be capped by two deep defenders.

Pair this call with HB Power O or Zone Fake Jet earlier in a drive to condition the defense to respect the run, then punish an overaggressive front with this shot play.

Use play action rollout protection awareness and manually slide protection toward the most likely edge blitz threat before the snap to protect your quarterback during the deeper developing routes.
