Zone Fake Jet is a play-action shot play out of Singleback Wing Stack that disguises itself as the Jet Sweep look from this same set. Pre-snap motion sells the jet sweep fake across the formation, then the quarterback bootlegs or works off the fake while the single route shown on the diagram releases vertically up the numbers off the play-action hard fake. The blocking up front sets up to sell run action, giving the deep route time to work behind linebackers who bite on the jet motion fake, making this a man beater against aggressive run support and a shot play designed to hit an explosive gain off run-pass conflict.
Defensive Reads
Check safety depth before the snap, if both safeties are sitting at 8 yards or shallower they are likely cheating toward run support and will bite on the jet fake, opening the vertical route. Identify man coverage by looking for defenders shading toward the jet motion man as he crosses the formation, true man teams will carry him across which vacates the deep route. Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with safeties staying deep despite the jet fake are the primary counter, those coverages keep numbers over the top and take away the shot play. Watch linebacker eyes at the snap, if they crash down on the fake instead of reading the mesh point, the seam and vertical windows open immediately behind them. A disciplined defense that keeps outside cornerbacks in press or off-man without peeking into the backfield will not fall for the run fake, forcing you to check into a run play at the line.
Usage Tips
Use this play after you have already run Jet Sweep or PA Jet Sweep at least once in the same drive so linebackers and safeties start keying the motion and bite harder on the fake.
Call this on early downs like first and ten or second and medium when defenses expect run and safeties are sitting closer to the box.
Watch for linebackers flowing hard with the jet motion pre-snap, that flow confirms man principles or aggressive run fits that this play is designed to exploit.
Hot route the backside tight end into a quick out or drag if you see a corner blitz coming off the edge away from the fake, this gives the quarterback a hot dump option.
Pair this play in sequence with HB Zone Wk or HB Stretch to keep defenders honest on zone run action before dialing up this shot play for the explosive strike.
