Breakdown

KC Smash is a classic smash concept out of Singleback Wing Stack with 12 personnel, built to attack Cover 2 and other two-deep shells. The diagram shows the outside receiver running a deep corner route to clear the flat defender, while the inside slot runs a quick hitch/curl underneath to sit in the void vacated by the flat defender. On the opposite side, the wing runs a shallow drag across the field as a checkdown or man beater against trailing coverage, and the backfield receiver runs a flat/wheel release to the boundary. Primary progression is corner to hitch high-low read on the smash side, then work back to the drag if the safety jumps the corner route.

Defensive Reads

Key the flat defender and cornerback relationship immediately after the snap, since Cover 2 forces the corner to choose between the hitch underneath and the corner route over the top. Watch for a user-controlled safety sitting in the deep half, since a disciplined safety can rob the corner route and turn this into a checkdown-only play. If the defense shows Cover 3 or Cover 4 with the corner playing deep quarter technique, expect the corner route to be taken away and the hitch to be the primary outlet instead. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the biggest liability for this play design, since there is no true man beater built into the smash side combo shown in the diagram. Look for underneath linebackers or a nickel defender sinking to the flat area, which signals zone drops and confirms the hitch and drag routes will have soft spots to work into.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify whether the corner is playing off or press and whether there are two deep safeties, since this play is engineered to punish Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells that leave the flat defender in conflict.

If you see man coverage across the board, hot route the drag into a deeper crossing route or bench the play for Y Stick or Levels instead since the corner-hitch combo loses value against man.

Use the hitch route as a hot read against blitz looks since it sits shallow and gives the quarterback a quick outlet before the corner route develops.

Pair this play with PA Dig or Curl Post Drag in your call sheet so the defense has to respect both the smash concept and play-action shots off similar formation and personnel.

Best called on second or third and medium when you need a high-low conflict on the corner to move the chains, especially against defenses sitting in zone to protect against explosive plays.
