Breakdown

The primary read progression starts with the right side corner route as the first option, works to the drag or crosser sitting underneath if the corner is taken away, then comes back to the left corner route developing over the top.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety alignment, a single high safety opens up both corner routes as legitimate deep threats. Watch cornerback press versus off alignment, off coverage cornerbacks can play the corner route better and force you to the underneath crossers. Post-snap, identify any user lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field who can jump the crossing routes and disrupt the shallow progression. Zone drops from linebackers or nickel defenders into the shallow crosser lanes signal a zone shell, prioritize the corner routes over the drag concept. Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells with safeties rotating hard to the sideline shut down the deep corner routes, forcing you into the underneath drag as the only real answer.

Usage Tips

Attack single high shells like Cover 3 or Cover 1 where the deep corner routes can win on cornerbacks without safety help over the top.

Check the right cornerback pre-snap, if he is playing tight man with no safety rotating over him, the deep corner route to that side wins immediately.

Use the shallow drag and crosser as your answer against Cover 4 or Cover 2 shells where the deep corners get eaten up by the flat defenders and safeties.

Hot route the backside receiver into a shallow drag if you diagnose a two high safety look pre-snap to speed up the underneath progression.
