Breakdown

PA Ctr Waggle is a play-action rollout out of Singleback Ace Slot 12 personnel that sells a center run fake before the QB waggles to the right edge. The diagram shows both outside receivers running vertical routes that break away from the sideline (deep comeback-angle verticals), the TE releasing from the backfield into a flat route breaking outside at the second level, and a wing TE running a delayed out breaking into the flat behind him, creating a natural high-low read on the boundary side as the QB rolls out. This is a play-action man beater designed to attack overaggressive linebackers and force a flat defender to choose between the underneath out route and the flat route, with the primary progression going flat route first, then the underneath out, and finally working back to the deep verticals if the pocket (or rollout lane) stays clean.

Defensive Reads

Watch for linebackers staying home instead of biting on the run fake, since that flat foot key can tip zone coverage and slow your rollout reads. Cover 2 and Cover 3 defenses with a hard-flowing flat defender will take away the underneath out route, so be ready to climb the ladder to the intermediate out breaking route or the verticals. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is where this play hits hardest, since the flat and out combo stresses man defenders trying to stay square during the rollout. If you see a defensive end or outside linebacker crashing hard upfield off the edge pre-snap, expect contain pressure on the waggle side and be ready to throw the ball away or check down early. User-controlled defenders sitting in the flat or lurking underneath the out route are the biggest threat to this concept, so scan for a spy or a defender cheating toward the boundary before committing to the throw.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs or in run-heavy personnel packages so the play fake actually threatens the defense and freezes linebackers.

Check the safety alignment before the snap: single-high shells with linebackers keying run flow are prime for this waggle since the flat and out combo attacks the vacated edge.

Use the flat route as your first read against zone defenses and boundary blitzes since the QB rollout gets you outside the pocket and away from interior pressure.

Pair this play with HB Power O or HB Dive from the same set so defenses respect the run fake, then hit them with PA Ctr Waggle once they start crashing downhill on early downs.

If the defense shows Cover 3 or Cover 4 with soft corners, hot route the outside verticals into deep comebacks or work the underneath out route since the sideline will be open in the rollout lane.
