Defensive Reads
Key the slot defender pre-snap, if he is aligned tight to the line of scrimmage in run support, expect the alert bubble to hit quickly and you should have a defender spying that flare. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, downhill linebackers flowing hard to the stretch open up cutback lanes, so a user-controlled defender should stay patient and read the OL flow instead of crashing. Identify the safety shell before the snap, a two high shell with soft corners signals the offense will likely take the bubble against light numbers outside. Blitz packages that bring extra defenders off the edge can be neutralized if the offense hot routes a blocker, so time blitzes to hit gaps rather than the perimeter. Zone coverages with a flat defender sitting on the bubble route shut this concept down, forcing the offense back into a true stretch run against a light box.
Usage Tips
Check the defensive box count before the snap, if there are six or more defenders in the box, pull the ball and throw the bubble immediately for a numbers advantage.
Use the bubble alert against aggressive run blitzes and Cover 0 looks where the slot corner or nickel is playing tight run support instead of respecting the flare.
Hot route the outside receiver into a block if the defense shows blitz off the edge to protect the stretch lane.
