HB Dive out of Singleback Ace Slot with 12 personnel sends the running back straight downhill through the A-gap on a direct handoff, with both tight ends and the offensive line blocking down to seal interior gaps. The two slot receivers stay uninvolved as decoys, meaning this is purely a north-south run play with no route concept or RPO attached. The primary read is a one-read, one-cut design: the HB reads the initial gap and bounces off the fullback or guard's block to whichever side opens up first.
Defensive Reads
Look for a light box with only four or five defenders before the snap, since that signals the dive has room to hit for a solid gain. Heavy blitz packages with linebackers stacked tight to the line can blow this play up before the back reaches the line of scrimmage, so respect A-gap blitzes. Man coverage on the perimeter receivers does not affect this run since no routes are run, but if the defense sends extra defenders into the box on obvious run downs, expect this play to get stuffed. Watch the middle linebacker's depth and flow, if he sits back reading run keys instead of crashing downhill, the cutback lane stays open. User-controlled defenders flying downhill immediately at snap often overrun the play side gap, giving the back a cutback for extra yards.
Usage Tips
Call HB Dive on early downs or short yardage to keep the defense honest against your play-action and dropback pass game out of Ace Slot. Watch pre-snap for stacked box counts. If the defense shows six or more in the box, consider audibling to a perimeter run like HB Stretch instead. Use the hot route to shift blocking assignments if you see a linebacker crashing hard into the play side gap before the snap. Pair this with PA Boot or PA Ctr Waggle later in the drive since both play actions off similar backfield action and freeze linebackers who bit on prior dive runs. Best used on 1st and 10 or 3rd and short when you need a guaranteed positive gain without exposing the QB to a sack.
