Defensive Reads
Count the box defenders pre snap since anything under six in the box favors the inside zone run over the bubble alert. Watch the slot cornerback depth and leverage because a defender sitting too far outside opens up the bubble screen for an easy underneath completion. Identify blitz packages that send extra defenders off the edge since those alignments often leave light boxes that the offense will exploit with the zone hand off. Man coverage with the corner locked tight on the slot receiver signals the offense will likely stay with the run since the bubble has no room to develop. Look for linebackers cheating downhill after the snap since aggressive run fits can be exploited if the offense hots the bubble route instead.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap and audible to the bubble alert if the defense has six or more defenders stacked inside.
Use this play on early downs like first and second down to stay ahead of the sticks and keep the defense honest against both run and pass.
