HB Dive Lt out of Singleback Ace Slot 12 personnel is a straight downhill run play with no route concepts on the diagram, just the HB taking a quick handoff and hitting the left side of the line behind the interior blocking surge. The offensive line and both tight ends fire off the ball to create a wedge, and the two receivers stay uninvolved as decoys since the play is designed to hit fast before the second level can react. The primary read is simply the initial gap: the HB presses the left A or B gap and reads the down blocks of the center and guard, cutting off whichever double team seals the first defender to show.
Defensive Reads
Watch for a stacked box pre-snap, if the defense shows six or more defenders inside the tackles this play will struggle to find a clean crease. Key the Mike linebacker's depth and lean, a downhill linebacker filling fast can blow up the dive before the HB reaches the line of scrimmage. Look for gap-control defensive tackles who stay square instead of getting washed by the double team, that is the biggest indicator this run gets stopped for minimal or negative yardage. This play struggles against interior blitzes and A-gap shoots since there is no lead blocker to pick up an unblocked rusher. It beats light boxes and defenses in nickel or dime personnel that are worried about the two receivers, since those packages leave fewer bodies to defend the interior run gaps.
Usage Tips
Call this play on early downs or short yardage situations like 3rd and 1 when you need a quick, low risk gain and want to punish a defense playing light in the box.
Check the pre-snap alignment of the defensive tackles and Mike linebacker depth, if the interior is stacked with extra bodies audible out of Dive and into an outside run instead.
Use this as a tempo changer after calling several dropback pass plays like Slants or Verts from the same Ace Slot formation, it keeps the defense honest and slows down aggressive edge rushers.
Combine this with HB Dive Lt in a run-pass sequence alongside PA Boot or PA Ctr Waggle since both plays share the same run action look and can freeze linebackers who bite on the dive fake.
Avoid calling this against heavy blitz packages that stack extra defenders inside the box, since the play has no answer built in if the interior gap is immediately clogged.
