Breakdown

PA Boot Over is a play-action rollout out of Singleback Ace Slot 12 personnel that pulls the quarterback to the boundary while the backfield fake sells the run. Off the play-action, the two outside receivers run a deep crosser and a corner/flag route from the left side, the slot receiver runs a deep out that breaks toward the sideline, and the inline TE checks down into a flat route underneath as the outlet. The primary read progression starts with the deep out breaking to the flat side, works down to the crossing route working away from the roll, and finishes with the flat route as the checkdown if the pocket collapses or the defense sits on the deeper routes.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify whether the strong safety is walked down near the line, since that often signals a run blitz or contain rush that can disrupt the boot action. Post-snap, watch for a user-controlled defender flowing hard to the play side flat, that lurk threat can jump both the deep out and the checkdown route. Cover 3 with a hard-flowing curl to flat defender is the toughest shell for this concept since it clogs both the out route and the TE flat simultaneously. Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets exposed by the deep out and the corner route stacking the sideline, look for the corner to bite on the initial flat fake. If the edge defender to the roll side crashes hard upfield without respecting the fake, expect a contain blitz, get the ball out on the flat route quickly before the pocket folds.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs or in play-action friendly counts like 2nd and medium when defenses are still respecting the run out of 12 personnel.

Check the safety alignment pre-snap, if you see two high safeties sitting deep, target the deep out since it settles in the void between the flat and deep zones.

Roll the pocket with the quarterback and stay on schedule, drifting too far outside the tackle box invalidates the crossing route as a viable option.

Hot route the flat route TE into a spot route against zone heavy shells if you need a faster underneath answer against a soft cushion.

Pair this with PA Boot and PA Heel Boot in the same set so the defense cannot key on rollout direction, then mix in Texan Y Drag to attack underneath if linebackers start jumping the out route.
