Roll Out Smash is a play-action rollout pass out of Singleback Ace Slot 12 personnel that combines the classic smash concept (hitch and corner) with a quarterback rollout to simplify the read for the passer. The QB rolls to the play side with a rollout pocket, giving him a run-pass option feel while the smash combo attacks the flat and corner zones. The primary read progression starts with the flat defender: if he sits on the hitch, throw the corner route behind him, and if he widens with the corner, dump the ball underneath to the shorter route in the flat.
Identify the flat defender immediately after the snap, his leverage on the hitch route dictates whether you throw underneath or attack the corner route behind him Watch for user controlled defenders sitting in a lurk position over the smash combo, a smart human defender will bait the QB into throwing the hitch then jump the route Check for Cover 3 or Cover 1 man looks pre-snap, since a hard charging force defender or press corner on the outside receiver can disrupt the timing of the corner route and shut this play down Look at linebacker depth before the snap, shallow linebackers who bite on the play fake will open up throwing lanes underneath and validate the rollout design Recognize blitz packages with edge pressure to the rollout side, since a contain blitz or nano blitz off the edge can collapse the pocket before the QB fully clears the rollout and forces an early checkdown
Attack Cover 2 shells since the rollout puts extra stress on the flat defender and corner while the smash combo is designed specifically to beat that shell
Check safety depth pre-snap, if both safeties are deep with corners playing soft off coverage this play is a green light versus Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells
Use play action rollouts like this on early downs such as first and ten or second and short to keep run fits honest and freeze linebackers before they can drop into throwing lanes
Hot route the backside receiver into a quick drag or spot route if you expect a blitz, since the rollout action naturally buys extra time but a hot route protects against overload pressure
Pair this call with HB Dive Lt or HB Power O earlier in a drive to sell the run action, then come back to Roll Out Smash once the defense starts crashing down on run fits
