HB Blunt Dive lines up out of Singleback Ace Slot with 12 personnel, showing two tight ends bunched tight to the formation and the halfback deep behind the quarterback. The diagram shows a downhill dive path straight through the interior gap, with the offensive line and both tight ends blocking down to create a lane between the guards and center. This is a straightforward gap run play, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and the primary read progression is simply pick the crease as the play develops, reading the down blocks from backside to frontside to decide whether to stick with the called gap or bounce it.
Defensive Reads
Watch the linebacker depth before the snap, if both inside linebackers are sitting shallow and stacked over the guards this play has almost no room to work. Identify whether the defense is in a run-fit front like 4-3 or 46 Bear, these fronts clog the interior gaps and force you to abandon the dive quickly. Key the safety alignment, a single high safety who stays deep leaves the box light and gives this dive a much better chance to hit for solid yardage. Post-snap, track whether the defensive tackles are getting immediate penetration, if they are the dive will get blown up before the back can find the crease. Beware defenses that show blitz with linebackers crashing downhill pre-snap, since a well-timed A-gap blitz can beat this play for a loss before the blockers can adjust.
Usage Tips
Use this play on early downs like first and ten or second and short to stay ahead of the chains and keep the defense honest against your pass-heavy calls in this set. Check the box count pre-snap, if the defense has six or more defenders stacked in the box this play will struggle so consider hot routing a tight end into a flare route or switching to a play-action shot instead. Pair HB Blunt Dive with HB Dive Lt and HB Counter to keep linebackers guessing on run direction while using the same personnel and formation look. Sequence this run early in a series to set up PA Boot or PA Ctr Waggle later, since defenders who bite on the play fake open up easy yardage off the same backfield action. User the fullback or lead blocker if available to seal the first defender in the hole rather than user-controlling the ball carrier immediately.
