Breakdown

HB Stretch out of Singleback Ace Slot is an outside zone run play with 12 personnel on the field, showing two receivers split wide and the offensive line flowing laterally toward the play side to reach block and create a horizontal running lane. The HB takes the handoff and reads his blocks moving from the play side edge back inside, pressing the line of scrimmage before deciding whether to bounce it outside or cut back through a natural lane created by overpursuing defenders. This is a pure run play, not a play-action look or RPO, and it beats aggressive fronts and gap-shooting linebackers who overcommit to lanes.

Defensive Reads

Watch for defensive ends and outside linebackers crashing hard down the line, if they overrun the play side edge the cutback lane opens immediately. Identify the play side flow of the linebackers post snap, if they are all sprinting horizontally without a spill defender the cutback should hit big. Stack the box with an extra defender in the run fit and use a user controlled linebacker to spy the cutback lane to shut this down. Cover 3 or Cover 1 with aggressive edge defenders sets the perfect trap since the stretch action baits defenders out of the cutback lane. Look for a fast flowing Mike linebacker, if the CPU or user defender diagnoses the zone stretch quickly and stays home in the cutback lane the run has nowhere to go.

Usage Tips

Run this against light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box since the stretch scheme relies on winning the edge with numbers.

Check safety depth pre snap, if both safeties are rolled deep in a two high shell you likely have a favorable run fit outside.

Use your left or right hot route trigger sparingly here since the play design already stretches the defense horizontally, focus instead on manually setting your blocking angle with the fullback or extra tight end if in a 12 personnel variant.

Pair HB Stretch with HB Counter or HB Misdirection from the same formation to keep defenders honest and punish linebackers who start flowing hard to the play side.

Best called on early downs or short yardage third downs where defenses are not yet in dime or nickel packages built to stop the outside run.
