Mtn PA Z Slide is a play-action pass out of Singleback Ace Slot with 12 personnel that starts with a receiver motion across the formation before the snap. Off the play fake, the two outside receivers push vertically, one running a deep corner or go route up the numbers while the other breaks in on a deep in cut over the middle, and a shallow crosser drags underneath from the boundary side to give the quarterback a low outlet against blitz pressure. The primary read progression starts with the deep in breaking route since it exploits vacated middle zones from the run fake, then works to the corner or go route on the outside, and finishes with the shallow crosser as the checkdown against pressure or when both deep routes are covered.
Defensive Reads
Read the play-action fake fully before committing linebackers downhill, since biting hard opens the deep in breaking route immediately. Watch for a single high safety rotating late, which signals man coverage underneath and makes the corner or go route a live option against a beaten cornerback. If you see two deep safeties holding their shell post-snap, the deep in route runner should be picked up by underneath zone defenders, forcing the quarterback to the shallow crosser. Spy or user the crossing route defender since that shallow drag becomes the checkdown outlet once the deep routes are covered. This play struggles against aggressive nano blitzes or overload pressure packages since the play fake delays the quarterback's first read and can lead to a sack before routes develop.

Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone by watching if a defender follows the receiver across the formation.
This play works best on early downs like first or second and short to medium when defenses are more likely to bite on the run fake.
