Breakdown

Stick out of Singleback Ace Slot with 12 personnel shows a route combo built to attack both man and zone coverage underneath. The backside runs a vertical seam paired with a deep out to clear space, while the frontside stacks a flat route and an angle/stick route from the slot that settles into the void between the flat and the hook zone. The RB releases vertical out of the backfield as a checkdown or coverage-tester on the far side. Primary progression reads flat to stick to seam, working outside in based on how the flat defender and inside linebacker react to the stick route.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check for two deep safeties versus one high; two high often signals Cover 2 or Cover 4 which invites the stick route into the flat/curl seam. Watch the slot cornerback's alignment: if he is playing outside leverage in press, the stick route's inside angle should win quickly against man coverage. Post-snap, key the underneath linebacker responsible for the hook/curl zone; if he sinks too deep chasing the seam, the stick route sits wide open underneath him. Beware of Cover 3 sky or buzz looks where the flat defender squats hard, since that can jump the flat route and force you to progress inside to the stick or seam. Blitz-heavy fronts with a Mike linebacker crashing downhill open natural throwing lanes for the RB check-down, so use lurk awareness to see if a user is dropping into that route late.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing zone or man by checking the depth of the slot corner and the linebacker spacing at the second level.

Against zone, key the flat defender first: if he sits, throw the stick route sitting behind him; if he widens, hit the flat immediately for a quick gain.

Against man coverage, use the stick route's angle break to create separation off the linebacker, especially against nano blitz packages where the LB is triggered downhill.

Hot route the backside deep out into a quick slant or hitch on third and short to give yourself a faster answer against Cover 3 sink zones.

Pair this play with Slot Under or Curl Flat from the same set to keep the defense guessing between quick underneath answers and deeper zone-clearing concepts, forcing linebackers to respect multiple stick-style reads.
