Wheel Mesh

Shotgun·Y Off Trips Pats·Personnel not specified

Breakdown

Wheel Mesh out of Shotgun Y Off Trips Pats pairs a classic mesh concept from the trips side with a wheel route out of the backfield or from the single receiver side, creating a natural pick element against man coverage while stretching the flat to sideline vertically. The mesh runners cross tight underneath to rub off man defenders, and the wheel route works off that traffic to climb up the sideline against a trailing linebacker or safety. This is a man beater at its core, and the primary read progression starts with the wheel route against man leverage, then works down to the mesh crossers underneath if the defender chasing the wheel gets a clean rub and coverage stays sticky inside.

Defensive Reads

Man coverage with no safety help over the top on the wheel side is the ideal shell for this play, especially against Cover 1 or Cover 0 blitz packages that isolate the wheel defender. If you see two deep safeties in a Cover 2 or Cover 4 shell, the wheel route will likely run into a deep half defender, so be ready to work the mesh crossers underneath instead. Watch linebacker depth at the snap. Linebackers sitting shallow with outside leverage on the mesh crossers can jump the picks and undercut the throw, so identify this before committing to the mesh reads. User-controlled defenders sitting in a shallow zone lurk near the mesh point are the biggest threat to this concept, since they can bait a mesh throw and jump the route. Zone blitz calls that bring extra rushers while dropping a corner or safety into the shallow zone can shut down the mesh crossers, so if you see pre-snap rotation toward the trips side, prioritize the wheel route immediately.

Usage Tips

Check the pre-snap alignment of the defender over your wheel route. If he is playing outside leverage or shows late motion adjustment, the wheel has a much higher chance of winning deep.

Use this play on second and medium to second and long when defenses are more likely to show man coverage or blitz looks, since the mesh traffic naturally disrupts man defenders trying to stay in phase.

Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or drag if you see a spy or extra underneath defender sitting in the middle of the field, giving yourself a checkdown against zone drops.

Pair this play with Pats Drag Wheel or Pats Cross earlier in a series so the defense starts keying wheel and drag combos, then come back to Wheel Mesh to hit the field once they overcommit to jumping the crossers.

Against user linebackers who like to spy or lurk, delay your throw to the wheel by half a beat to let the mesh pick clear the lane, since the user defender will often bite on the shallow crossers first.
