WR Screen out of Shotgun Y Off Trips Pats is a quick-hitting screen pass designed to get the ball to a trips-side receiver in space behind a wall of blockers. The offensive line and slot receivers release immediately to set up perimeter blocks while the outside receiver sits and waits for the throw, making this a pure finesse screen rather than a route-concept beater. The primary read is the bubble or screen receiver on the trips side, with the QB looking to get the ball out fast before working backside only if the screen is jumped by an aggressive blitz.
Watch the flat and curl zone defenders pre-snap. If they are sitting shallow near the line of scrimmage, they can drive on the screen before blockers get out in front. Identify Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with linebackers reading the backfield. Disciplined linebackers who do not bite on play action will scrape outside quickly and blow up the screen timing. Key the slot corner or nickel defender's leverage. If he is playing off with outside leverage, he can trigger downhill and beat the block before the receiver turns upfield. User-controlled defenders sitting in a lurk position near the trips side are the biggest threat. If the user jumps the screen route immediately at the snap, this play has almost no answer. Look for overload blitzes from the trips side. An overloaded blitz that sends extra rushers into that side will often have a defender fall right into the screen lane, killing the play before it starts.
Call this against pressure-heavy defenses since blitzing linebackers and slot corners take themselves out of position, leaving green grass for the screen to develop.
Check the pre-snap alignment of the trips-side flat defender. If he is sitting at five yards or closer, this play gets stuffed, so audible to a different concept or hot route the running back into a checkdown.
Use this on early downs or in obvious passing situations where the defense shows man coverage with press corners, since press alignment removes underneath help and lets your blockers climb to the second level.
Pair this with Y Off Trips Close or Jets Curl in the same set to keep defenses honest. If you hit the screen once, the defense will start crashing hard, which opens up play-action shots off the same formation.
Avoid calling this against zone-heavy defenses with disciplined linebackers who stay square. They will read the screen fast and blow it up before blockers get set.
